Agnes Obel is a singer/songwriter from Copenhagen, Denmark. Facinating album with only piano and strings, simple melodies and unhurried pace, gives a hypnotic feeling. It´s recorded closely. It feels like sitting next to Agnes in a small room. Favorite songs are: "Fuel to Fire", The Curse", Pass Them By" and "Smoke & Mirrors".
2. Boy And Bear - Harlequin Dream (2013)
Boy And Bear is an indie folk-rock band from Sydney, Australia. Album reached # 1 on ARIA, Austrtalian highest selling album list. And it´s a very good album. Favorites are "Southern Sun" and "Harlequin Dream".
3. Beachwood Sparks - Desert Skies (2013)
Beachwood Sparks is an alternative country/pop band from Los Angelse, USA. Strangely, Desert Skies was recorded in 1997 but released 2013. The songs reminds of the sixties, with psychedelic sound and all. Favorites include "Desert Skies" and "Make It Together".
4. Brandy Clark - 12 Stories (2013)
Brandy Clark is a country musik singer/songwriter from the state of Washington USA. She later moved to Nashville. Her songs are about divorce, drugs, jail, and Jesus. Twelve stories about real people who live their lives. A fantastic debut album! There isn´t a bad song on the album, and "Stripes" is the hit single.
5. Brown Bird - Fits of Reason (2013)
Brown Bird is an folk music band based in Rhode Island,USA. The band is reduced to a duo, after several members left. Voices, guitar and fiddle together with odd melodies and tempo changes makes an album of strange beauty. Favorites "Seven Hells", Nine Eyes", Bow for Blade" and "The Messenger".
6. Carrie Rodriguez - Give Me All You Got (2013)
Carrie Rodriguez is an Mexican-American singer/songwriter and violin player from Texas, USA. There is eleven fantastic songs that covers rock, blues and folk music. She has a fantastic voice and the songs are all so good it´s not possible to pick any favorites!
7. Cecile Verny Quartet - Fear & Faith (2013)
Cecile Verny is a jazz singer from Ivory Coast, but now living in Germany. She sings in german and french and the musicans accompanying her plays piano, bass and drums. The style is melodic, and often soft and slow. Favorites are: "The Wild Heart of the Earth", How Do I Love Thee", "They Ask Me How I'm Feeling" and "Time to Let You Go".
8. Kacey Musgraves - Same Trailer Different Park (2013)
Kacey Musgraves is country singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas, USA. This is not just another country singer. Good melodies and beautful voice, sung in midtempo. Three songs are extra good: "Silver lining", "Dandelion" and "Step off".
9. Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle (2013)
Laura Marling is a folk singer/songwriter from Hampshire, UK. This is her fourth album. It´s relaxed and have not less than sixteen songs. Instruments consists mainly of acoustic guitar, cello and organ. Soft and melodic like early Van Morrison. Quite enjoyable! Five favourites here: "Little Love Caster", "Devil's Resting Place", "Undine", "Once" and "Pray For Me".
10. Leftover Cuties – The Spark and The Fire (2013)
Leftover Cuties is a band from Los Angeles, USA. Twelve tracks spanning from rock to jazz from the twenties. Very good music from this unknown band . It sounds fantastic! My favorites are: "One Heart", "Clarity" and "If Only It Could Be".
11. Maggie Rose - Cut To Impress (2013)
Maggie Rose is a country singer from Maryland, USA. This is her debut studio album. Good voice and good songs makes an outstanding album! My favorites are are "Preacher's Daughter" and "Mostly Bad".
12.Mustered Courage - Powerlines (2013)
Mustered Courage is a bluegrass band from Australia. The quartet share the vocals and the banjo is the main instrument on this, their second album. It sounds fantastic: good vocals, immaculate handling of the instruments, especially the banjo. Favorites are the first eight songs.
13. Roddy Woomble - Listen to Keep (2013)
Roddy Woomble is an indie rock singer/songwriter from Scotland, UK. This is his third solo album. He is best known as the lead vocalist of Idlewild, an indie rock band. Here we find first class singing and playing. Good compositions makes the listening very enjoyable! Favorites are the first four songs, especially the title song, " Listen to Keep".
14. Self Help Group - Not Waving But Drowning (2013)
Self Help Group is a folk rock group from Brighton, UK. It´s their debut album. They deliver multi-part harmonies and experienced instrument handling. An impressive debut album! Instrumentation: banjo, guitar, keyboards, bass and percussion. My first choices are: "Needles", "The rapture" and "Prisoner".
15. Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind (2013)
Tedeschi Trucks Band is a blues rock group from Florida, USA. Susan Tedechi and Derek Trucks are a married couple. The music is heavy blues and they are very experienced musicians. Result is an unusually good blues album! Four favorites: "Do I Look Worried", "It's So Heavy", "Sweet And Low" and "Calling Out To You".
16. Wild Child - The Runaround (2013)
Wild Child is a folk/rock group fromTexas, USA. Fantastic melodies, great vocals, where the female/male voices are intertwined seamlessly. There is not one bad track on the album! Favorites: "The Runaround", "Victim To Charm", "Crazy Bird" and "Coming Home".
